David Lutalo

Early Life & Background

WEBSITE FOR SALE: MELOPLAY

David Lutalo was born on 8 March 1986 (though some sources list 1989 as his birth year) in the Luwero District of Uganda.

His parents are Mr Luggya Robinson (father) and Mastula Nassazi (mother).

He attended multiple schools: Kikunyu Primary School, Balitta Lwogi Primary School, then Kasana Town Academy (for his Uganda Certificate of Education) and began studies at Busisa Grammar for A-Level but did not complete.

Before his break in music, Lutalo engaged in various odd jobs like charcoal burning, carpentry/brick laying, and construction porter work — all to raise funds for his education and music ambitions.

Entry into Music & Breakthrough

Lutalo began composing songs during his school years. For instance, he reportedly wrote “Kapapaala” while in S4 (senior four) of secondary school.

His big breakout came with the single “Kapapaala” released around 2008 under his label Da Hares Records, which earned him wide recognition in Uganda.

His style combines Afro-pop, Afrobeat and elements of traditional Ugandan vocal styles; he is known for his high-toned, sharp voice popular across both urban and rural audiences.

Career Highlights & Achievements

Over his career starting around 2007-2008, he has released several hit singles (e.g., “Akantu”, “Kwasa”, “Tugende”) and worked with other prominent artists.

In 2016, at the HiPipo Music Awards, he won the Artiste of the Year award.

In recent times he has indicated ambitions to target the international music market, for example via a new EP aimed at global audiences.

Personal Life & Style

Despite his success, Lutalo has retained humility about his past. He once said: “I’m still a charcoal-burning expert… you should never think that if you take me from where I am now, I will lack what to eat.”

On the topic of relationships, he has spoken frankly about struggles with finding love, while being a father of two children.

He also has spoken out about how he allows upcoming artists to emulate his style but draws the line at impersonation — stressing authenticity in artistry.

Legacy & Impact

David Lutalo has become one of Uganda’s well-known music figures: accessible to both rural and urban markets, thanks to his vocals and relatable themes.

His story is often cited as one of rags to riches in the Ugandan entertainment scene coming from modest beginnings, doing manual work, to achieving stardom.

As a figure in Ugandan pop culture, he helps bridge traditional and modern musical forms, and his career illustrates how talent plus persistence can overcome structural challenges.

Discography & Notable Songs

While not exhaustive, some of his notable songs include:

“Kapapaala” (his breakout)

“Akantu”

“Kwasa”

“Tugende”
He also collaborates with other artists and works under his own label.

Why He’s Interesting

Because of his distinctive voice and the sheer depth of his life journey (from charcoal business to music stardom), his career is both inspiring and instructive for anyone in creative arts.

For you as a singer (since I understand you’re a singer), his story resonates: the idea of leveraging skill, resilience, and understanding one’s background to shape a voice and brand.

He also demonstrates the importance of authenticity: staying true to your roots (Luwero, his vernacular, his early life) while also adapting to broader markets.
